Where are you from, and what’s your favorite thing about New York City?

I am from New York City, and my favorite thing about it is how much of it you can experience on foot. Walking through the city brings a constant sense of day to day stimulation, and over the years I have come to appreciate exploring the many different pockets of New York this way. It is difficult to get bored here.

How did you first start singing and writing songs?

To be honest I can’t remember exactly how? But when I was in music school for cello as a kid, I would spend time in the practice rooms teaching myself piano. I'd play around and try different things and at some point, naturally would sing while I was playing.

Do you remember the first song you ever wrote? What was it about?

I can’t remember what it was about exactly. I do remember that I found the process of finishing that first song to be incredibly therapeutic and it helped me get in touch with my emotions in a meaningful way.

Where do you get your ideas for songs?

I think my songs usually start with a feeling. I get inspired by different musical worlds and whatever I am particularly interested in at the time. Whether it is odd meters, music from a specific region, or a particular vocal style, etc… These things definitely influence how I develop an idea. But everything begins with an emotion I want to express. A long time ago, an acting teacher told me that art is about communicating emotion from one human being to another. I think that idea has stayed with me and, in a way, has subconsciously shaped how I make music.

Do you play any instruments?

I play the piano, cello and sing :)

Do you have a favorite song you’ve written? Why do you like it?

I’ve never thought about that actually! I’m not sure that I have a favorite song that I’ve written, but feel most connected to whatever I’ve worked on most recently.

Who are your biggest inspirations in music?

I’ve got so many. Kate Bush, Stevie Wonder, and Tchaikovsky are a few to name. Also, the musicians I’ve met and collaborated with over the years have been incredibly inspiring and influential in my growth.

If you could have a superpower while performing, what would it be?1 response

Maybe if I could disappear and reappear like a magician. That could be cool!

How do you stay motivated when you’re practicing or writing?

I think as long as I minimize distractions, I tend to stay motivated and see things through. Keeping the mindset that nothing else can bother or worry me while I’m working is important. Honestly, even something as simple as putting my phone on silent helps. There are so many ways to get distracted or feel like you should be doing something else, so learning how to quiet that noisy mind is really important for me.

Can you describe your music in just three words?

Modular, lyrical, confessional

What advice would you give kids who want to sing or write songs?

Try not to judge yourself during the process. Do not worry about whether what you are making is “good,” “bad,” or “perfect.” Just keep going. You will get better and better, like with anything else.
